Webflow has not provided an official timeframe for Round 2 of Ecommerce that includes native support for digital and downloadable products. However, there are reliable workarounds you can implement in the meantime.
1. Webflow’s Current Limitations
- Webflow does not natively support automatic file delivery or digital downloads at checkout.
- All products are currently treated as physical by default, even if shipping is disabled for the item.
2. Workarounds for Selling Digital Products
You can still set up a functional system by using these approaches:
- Set up digital items as physical products in Webflow Ecommerce.
- Mark them as non-shipping by unchecking "Requires shipping."
- Use a custom product thumbnail and description to indicate it's a digital item.
- Deliver files manually via email:
- Use Zaps in Zapier to automate sending a custom email when a new order is received.
- Include the download link or access instructions in the email body.
- Use third-party delivery platforms, such as:
- Gumroad, SendOwl, or E-junkie, which specialize in secure file delivery.
- Embed their "Buy Now" buttons or widgets in your Webflow site via custom embeds.
- Use Memberstack or Outseta:
- Pair Webflow with Memberstack (or Outseta) to restrict access to a “thank you” or “download” page.
- After purchase/registration, redirect users to this protected page containing the download link.
3. Important Considerations
- If using Zapier or email, host your files on Google Drive, Dropbox, or Amazon S3, and ensure the sharing link is set properly.
- Include automated purchase receipts in Webflow and tie them into your Zapier workflow.
- For a seamless user experience, add a post-purchase message confirming that they’ll receive the file by email shortly.
Summary
Webflow hasn’t announced a timeline for when digital/downloadable products will be natively supported. For now, treat digital items as physical products with shipping disabled and use tools like Zapier, Memberstack, or Gumroad to handle file delivery. These workarounds allow you to operate a digital download store until native support is added.
