Has anyone experienced a similar issue with the Webflow Lightbox element? When opening the lightbox on our Gallery page, an old image is displayed multiple times. We have tried changing the group name but the issue persists. Additionally, the positioning of the lightbox images is inaccurate. Any suggestions on how to fix this? Thank you!

TL;DR
  • Check each Lightbox to ensure correct image connections and remove duplicates or outdated links.
  • Temporarily remove group names, clear asset cache, re-upload images, and verify styling and layout settings to fix positioning and image persistence issues.

You're experiencing a Webflow Lightbox issue where outdated images persist and image positioning inside the lightbox is incorrect, even after attempting a group name change. This commonly arises from stale asset references or duplicated connections in the Lightbox setup.

1. Verify Lightbox Connections and Duplicates

  • Check each Lightbox element in your Gallery to ensure that only the correct image is connected.
  • Sometimes when duplicating elements, the Lightbox Media remains linked to an older image even if the thumbnail is updated.
  • Select a Lightbox and open its Lightbox Media settings. Make sure the intended asset is selected.
  • Remove and re-add problematic Lightboxes to clear any hidden references.

2. Remove Group Name (Temporarily) to Test

  • To isolate the issue, remove the Group Name entirely from each Lightbox component.
  • Publish and test on the live site to see if multiple images are still duplicating or stacking incorrectly.
  • This confirms whether the issue is with grouping logic or individual Lightbox configuration.

3. Clear Webflow Asset Cache

  • If old images are appearing, they may be cached assets.
  • Rename and re-upload the correct image files so Webflow treats them as new assets.
  • You can also try deleting the old images under Assets and reassigning new ones to the Lightbox.

4. Confirm Lightbox Embed in Collection Lists (if used)

  • If you're using Collection Lists for the Gallery and Lightboxes are nested within, ensure that:
  • Each Lightbox is referencing the correct image field from the Collection Item.
  • There are no hidden or duplicated Collection Items causing repeated Lightbox entries.

5. Recheck Z-Index and Layout for Positioning

  • Incorrect positioning inside the Lightbox often relates to custom styling or conflicting z-index values.
  • Go to Navigator and verify that no parent elements (containers, flexboxes) have conflicting styles (e.g., relative positioning, overflow hidden).
  • Reset Lightbox styles to default and test positioning.

6. Use Webflow’s Built-In Lightbox Previews

  • In Designer mode, test the Lightbox to see what image loads in the preview.
  • Right-click the Lightbox thumbnail → Open Lightbox Settings → ensure the right image is connected.

Summary

To fix Lightbox issues with outdated images and incorrect layout, review each Lightbox’s media connection, remove group names to troubleshoot, clear hidden asset links by deleting and re-uploading, and confirm layout styles are not affecting image positioning. Rebuilding one Lightbox from scratch can also help pinpoint whether the issue is systemic or isolated.
