To transfer your domain to a new website/template on Webflow, you’ll need to disconnect it from the old Webflow project and reconnect it to the new one. Here’s how to do it step-by-step.
1. Remove Your Domain from the Old Webflow Project
- Go to Project Settings of the old site.
- Click the Hosting tab.
- Scroll down to the Custom Domains section.
- Remove your domain (click the trash icon) to unlink it from the current project.
Note: Removing the domain here doesn’t affect your domain registrar settings.
2. Add Your Domain to the New Webflow Project
- Open the new Webflow site working with the new template.
- Go to Project Settings > Hosting.
- Scroll to the Custom Domains section.
- Click Add a Custom Domain and input your domain name (e.g., www.example.com).
- Click Add Domain.
- Webflow will show the required A records and CNAME for your domain.
3. Update DNS Records at Your Domain Registrar
Go to your domain registrar (e.g., GoDaddy, Namecheap, Google Domains) and do the following:
- Delete old A and CNAME records related to Webflow from the previous setup.
- Add two A records:
- (a) 75.2.70.75
- (b) 99.83.190.102
- Add a CNAME record:
- Name: www
- Target: proxy-ssl.webflow.com
These DNS settings point your domain to the new Webflow site.
4. Set the Default Domain in Webflow
- Return to the Hosting tab in the new project’s settings.
- Click the "Make Default" star next to the primary version of your domain (usually www.yourdomain.com).
- Then click Publish and select the domain(s) to publish your site.
5. Wait for DNS Propagation
- DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to fully propagate, though it’s usually much faster.
- Use sites like whatsmydns.net to check the propagation status globally.
Summary
To transfer your domain to a new Webflow site, remove it from the old project, add it to the new one, update your DNS records to Webflow’s values, and publish. This process ensures your domain now points to the new design/template without needing to transfer registration.
